About

THE STUDIO

Operating out of her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, Sara Schoenberger studio formally took root in Brooklyn, New York around 2019. The studio offers lighting design services for brands as well as its own made-to-order products that are placed in galleries, private residences and commercial spaces.

With every project, Sara seeks to balance her curiosity about less conventional materials with more traditional manufacturing techniques and is interested in a contrast of both. Her design process involves numerous prototypes made by hand in her studio.

Believing strongly that all objects, and lighting in particular, are an opportunity for communal experience, the studio also collaborates with other artists on more temporary time-based installations. Recent projects include a collaboration with dream-pop band Silver Liz, for whom the studio created transportable floor lamps that they could creatively sync with the music live on stage.

SARA SCHOENBERGER

Sara Schoenberger, founder of the eponymous studio, earned her BFA at Carnegie Mellon University in sculpture and installation art. She then worked for over seven years for some of New York’s most prestigious lighting design firms before transitioning to her own studio practice full-time.

Sara’s work is often marked by a strong graphic quality, which can be traced back to a childhood spent drawing as well as her background in sculpture. This minimalistic, graphic aesthetic considers the surrounding environment, dynamically drawing the eye around a space.

Growing up in New Orleans, with a historic preservationist architect as a mother, her style is influenced by a wide variety of objects and architectural ornament from the past, most from before 1900.

With her husband, Andrew Algier, she co-curates Radiator, an annual group exhibition for emerging designers that takes place during New York Design Week.

Sara is currently available for custom lighting design and prototyping services. Please feel free to get in touch regarding your upcoming projects.
